The journey to Enugu state was quite an unforgettable one as
the weather was cold and the Arik Air Cabin crew were hospitable and welcoming
in the early hour of Monday 29th January 2018. Expectation was high as we
departed Ikeja Airport at exactly 7:30am and touched down at the Enugu airport
at exact 8:30am.
Enugu was quiet, safe and people were busy with their
businesses just as you will see in any state. The bus driver was so nice and he
easily helps in describing a tax station close to the arrival terminal.
TEAM A @ENUGUSTATE |
The tax station mentioned was the Tax Office at Oloco Gate,
Ogui Road, Enugu. Edinburgh: BIR, Edinburgh, By Zik Avenue, Uwani, Enugu. My
observation there suggests that it looks primitive, having old buildings and
most staff there were seen frowning in the early hours of Monday.
I was mot bothered because I have to be at Port Harcourt internal revenue
service to ensure that work is done. Infact, the staff at Asata tax station
were so rude and if I had raised my voice at them, it is possible I get delayed. I had to play along and see my way through because it is a must I
have the returns filed. Oh! one funny thing again was that the tax officer
could not even check the payment evidence; I watched her for some minutes and told her what she was doing was
wrong and I won’t take those document if they are not appropriately done. She
hissed and insulted me in her language which I didn’t understand but I let it
go.
Fast forward. While we were through with the returns, I
promised myself that I won’t return to that very tax station because their mode
of operation is not in agreement with all the tax stations because they (the
tax station) were all after their target and as such, taxpayers were treated
rudely.
I departed Enugu state for River State with a red eye. But
then, I let go because I can relate with the modus operandi of the tax system in
Nigeria.
I will say it was a wonderful experience. Their food tastes
good but I will conclude that the staffs were just being unprofessional or lack
the basic goal-getting spirit which made the secondary goal more desired to
primary goal attainment.
My submission, Enugu Internal revenue service has got lots of
works to do.
Oh! River State, such a blessed state; Rivers State is one of
the 36 states of Nigeria. Its capital is Port Harcourt. It is bounded on the
South by the Atlantic Ocean, to the North by Imo, Abia, and Anambra States, to
the East by Akwa Ibom State and to the West by Bayelsa and Delta states.
Rivers state is home to a variety of ethnic clans, including
Abua, Andoni, Ekpeye, Engenni, Etche, lbani, lkwerre, Kalabari,
Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Okrika, and Ogoni. The inland part of Rivers state consists
of tropical rainforest; towards the coast, the typical Niger Delta environment
features many mangrove swamps. Rivers state, named after the many rivers that
border its territory, was part of the Oil Rivers Protectorate from 1885 till 1893
when it became part of the Niger Coast Protectorate. In 1900 the region was
merged with the chartered territories of the Royal Niger Company to form the
colony of Southern Nigeria.
River state internal revenue Service finally moves from his
temporary building at Jumbo Williams Old GRA Port Harcourt to Rainbow House,
Amadi Port Harcourt. The building shows the wealth of the state and the staff
there were well organized, professional and possesses a teamwork spirit. It was
a busy work at the internal revenue as there was an influx of taxpayers from
the different part of the country but the period spent at River state is
worthwhile.
Oyo State, is an inland state in south-western Nigeria, with
its capital in Ibadan. It is bounded in the north by Kwara State, in the east
by Osun State, in the south by Ogun State and in the west partly by Ogun State
and the Republic of Benin.
The Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue is a State Revenue
Agency that derives its existence from the Personal Income Tax Act Law of the
Federation 2004, which stipulates the establishment of THE BOARD OF INTERNAL
REVENUE by all the States of the Federation.
The Oyo State Edict of 1996 established that the Board should
carry out the functions of assessing, collecting and accounting for taxes,
levies, and fees with the additional responsibility of tax policy formation for
the state.
In April 2004, The Governor of the State (Oyo) gave the Board
the authority to implement the said Edict of 1996, in its entirety. That
mandate led to the restructuring of the Board in terms of organizational
structure and improved revenue generation.
